The Most Affordable Way to Update Tile Walls

Update Tile Walls

Do you have tile walls in your bathroom that immediately date your home? Perhaps they’re a strange color, or maybe they have a dated design on them. Whatever the case may be, there is an affordable way to update tile walls. Read on to learn how you can easily transform your bathroom on a budget.

Tile Refinishing – Yes, It’s That Easy!

You don’t have to tear down your tile walls. All you need to do is cover them with a color or pattern you like. You could opt for an all-white design, or you could choose a faux stone pattern in whatever color you like. You’ll spend hundreds instead of thousands, and you’ll end up with a durable finish that’s built to last.

Benefits of tile refinishing include:

  • No demolition. The new glaze goes over your existing tile, saving you time and money.
  • Quick turnaround. Most projects take a few hours to complete, and the tile is fully cured within a few days.
  • Endless customization options. You can choose the exact colors you want for every surface in your bathroom.
  • Seamless tile repair. If you have cracks, scratches or chips on your tile, we’ll repair them before refinishing them. Your new tile surface will look pristine.
  • No grout lines to clean. Tile refinishing covers the grout and the tile, eliminating the need to scrub porous grout.
  • Budget-friendly refresh. Change the look of your tile, countertops, tub, or other surfaces without paying a fortune for bathroom remodeling.

What It Takes to Remove or Replace Tile Walls

You may be wondering, “Why can’t I just remove the tile?” The fact is that removing and/or replacing tile is not an easy process. You can pry the tile off with a crowbar, putty knife, or other tools, but you must be careful about damaging other surfaces in the bathroom. Then you have to worry about the wall under the tile. It will most likely be damaged along the way, no matter how careful you are. That means you’ll need to repair or replace the drywall before you can consider adding new tile.

If you don’t put new tile up, you’ll need to match the wall texture with the other texture in your bathroom. You also run the risk of opening a can of worms, especially in an older home. What lurks behind the wall? Are there other issues might you reveal? What you picture to be a weekend project may end up costing thousands of dollars in repairs. Skip the stress and refinish your existing tile!

An Alternative Way to Cover Tile Walls

If you don’t think tile refinishing is right for you and you don’t want to remove/replace the tile, you could consider covering it with beadboard or another form of paneling. You will need to thoroughly clean the tile and lightly sand the surface. Then adhere the paneling using a heavy duty construction adhesive. You could also build a thin frame out of wood around the tiled area and then connect the panels to the frame. Cap the top with decorative trim, and you could create the sense of custom molding around your bathroom.

This option will not work in all bathrooms. If you have a small bathroom, the extra thickness of the paneling and trim could make it feel closed off and awkward. You also have to consider how the paneling will look when it gets close to the tub and shower. Is there a logical ending for it, or will it look odd next to the tile? Furthermore, you’ll have to fit the panels around your toilet, vanity, cabinets, etc., which may make for a difficult installation process. Ultimately, it may look worse than the tile you had before.
